Mirror's Edge
Mirror's Edge 2 is still in the works, and will more than likely use the Frosbite 2 engine, according to EA Games President Frank Gibeau.
Back in March, IGN interviewed EA Games President Frank Gibeau, who confirmed that there was still life in the Mirror's Edge franchise. When asked about a sequel, he said "We're looking at ideas for it, absolutely."
Well, it seems the Frostbite 2 engine -- used by Battlefield 3 to deliver some of the most realistic visuals yet seen in games -- is a part of those ideas.
Gibeau told Gametrailers Geoff Keighley, "We love that franchise. The DICE guys really created something special the first time around. You've got to have a big idea to be able to do the next one, and that's what we're working on."
When Keighley suggested that it might use Frosbite 2, Gibeau replied, "You'll see that combination, I'm sure."
Sprinting across an urban landscape, rendered using Frosbite 2, could be a visually stunning combination.
A ‘small team’ is working on Mirror’s Edge 2, EA has confirmed.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com at E3, the outspoken Patrick Soderlund, who as senior vice president at EA Games Europe oversees all European game development, said he was “excited” by what developer DICE, where he is based, will do with the game.
Mirror’s Edge divided opinion on its release in November 2008. While fans applauded the innovative Parkour-inspired first-person action, critics slammed the game for its short length and poor storyline.
When asked for an update on the future of the IP, Soderlund told us: “Mirror’s Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move. The game wasn’t perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think.”
He added: “You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.”
Soderlund’s comments are the first confirmation that a sequel is in development. Up to this point the game had only been mentioned by EA as a title in consideration. During a December 2008 conference call EA CEO John Riccitiello assured fans that the company wasn’t giving up on the IP, despite less than stellar sales.
As reported by Edge, Riccitiello said: "Mirror's Edge is one that was very strongly reviewed, that one's going to go forward. We're probably going to look into some issues around the design to make sure strong IP is married with strong business."
Unfortunately Soderlund couldn't offer any other details or a possible release date on the game.
BTW don't Worry the game will come 1 Day
As I stated before, Mirror’s Edge 2 has been stopped in development, but not killed. Now the folks at EA have spoken up saying they swear they haven’t killed the series for good.
Speaking to CVG.com, EA Games label chief Frank Gibeau finally broke the “we have nothing further to announce” statement with a little more detail about why Mirror’s Edge 2 is being put on hold.
When asked if he really did officially kill the series, Gibeau stated outright, “Not at all. We’re just trying to figure out how to bring Mirror’s Edge back and in what way. That’s part of the creative development process… I know there are some stories about how EA killed Mirror’s Edge. Well, I’m the guy; I greenlight the games. I did not kill it – as God is my witness.”
What it does come down to, however, is sales. ”What we said internally is: ‘What do we need to do to make [a sequel] a hit?’ We need to go from version one to version two so that it sells two to three times as many, it finds a much bigger audience. The first game from a quality standpoint was good, but now it needs to be great,” Gibeau says, “We’re actively working on ideas in the Mirror’s Edge universe, we just haven’t locked yet on a way to bring it back and a way that fans will be excited, but at the same time we can get it to a bigger audience.”
For now, the developers at DICE are working on Battlefield 3. Perhaps we will hear a little more regarding the future of Mirror’s Edge 2 after this fall, when Battlefield 3 is expected to drop. Until then, fans will have to remain patient, but at least we all can feel relieved to know that EA hasn’t given up on the series yet.Last edited by Xinu; 28-07-2011 at 12:11.
