Huge news: Dragon Quest IX announced for NDS
Dragon Quest IX announced
Today, Square-Enix has made a huge announcement by confirming a new Dragon Quest title. The Action-RPG Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no Mamoribito will be released for Nintendo's NDS and this is a huge shock for Sony. Dragon Quest was one of the top games on Sony's console.
The game will be developed by Level 5, the same developer as for Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King and Jeanne D'Arc. The soundtrack will be composed by Kouichi Sugiyama.
Via the WiFi connection of the NDS, the game can be played by as much as four different players and the top screen will feature the map of the dungeon, while the action takes place on the bottom screen. The battle system will be very different from previous Dragon Quest titles and it will be more action orientated. This new Dragon Quest title is not just a minor game or spin off, but it will be a full fletched game.
Yuji Horii, the father of the Dragon Quest game series, is aware that the NDS brings some limitations, but he is sure they will overcome these limitations. Ports to others consoles are not planned, neither a connection to the Wii for data transfer.
Up until now, about 41 million copies of Dragon Quest games have been sold worldwide, only few games series do a better job. This is a huge loss for Sony, but they still have the Final Fantasy series, that, at least until Final Fantasy XIII, will stay on Sony's console.
The official Dragon Quest IX site is already launched, you can visit it here.
Pictures of Dragon Quest IX and the Square-Enix presentation of this game can be viewed on Gamefront.
A Japanese TV spot for Dragon Quest IX can be downloaded here.
The planned release date is late 2007 in Japan.
