[News] US Airways Blow Out tijdens landing
(CBS4 News) MIAMI One of four runways at Miami International Airport remains shutdown after a U.S. Airways jet had a double blow out upon landing and then matters got worse when one of the blown out tires caught fire on runway 27, the main runway at the airport.
Flight 431 was arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina around 1:30pm Thursday afternoon when two tires blew out on the left side of the Boeing 737.
Airline spokesman Morgan Durrant said there were 113 passengers and five crew members who escaped using the emergency slides. Nobody was hurt and the fire was quickly extinguished with white foam that surrounded the airplane as seen by CHOPPER 4 which flew over the scene immediately after the incident.
After deploying the emergency slides and escaping the plane, the passengers and crew were put on several buses and taken to safety off the runway to the airport terminal.
Freelance AP photographer Luis Alvarez was driving past the airport when the incident happened and took some pictures of the fire burning underneath the plane as fleeing passengers looked on. Alvarez says the passengers didn't look frightened but did look like they wanted to got off the plane in a hurry.
Westbound traffic has backed up on the Dolphin Expressway, also known as 836, which runs parallel to the airport, due to onlooker delays.
Federal Aviation Administration records show the plane was built in 1989.
